Mega Millions is one of America's largest multi-state lottery games, with drawings held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 PM ET. Players select five main numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball number from 1 to 24 (reduced from 25 in the April 2025 redesign). "Hot" numbers are those drawn more frequently than average, while "cold" numbers appear less often. In our dataset of 922 Mega Millions drawings, some numbers have naturally appeared more than others simply due to random variation. It is important to understand that this does not make them more or less likely to appear in the next drawing.

This concept is often confused with the gambler's fallacy — the mistaken belief that if a number hasn't appeared in a while, it's "due" to come up. In reality, each of the 70 main numbers and 25 Mega Ball numbers has exactly the same probability of being drawn every time, regardless of past results. Frequency analysis is useful for understanding historical data, but it has no predictive power over future drawings.

The patterns section below shows the ratio of odd to even numbers drawn and how often consecutive numbers appear together. For example, an odd/even ratio near 1.0 means odd and even numbers are drawn in roughly equal proportion. Consecutive number pairs (like 14-15 or 32-33) occur naturally in random drawings — on average, you can expect about one consecutive pair every few draws.

These patterns emerge from the mathematics of random selection and are expected in any sufficiently large dataset. They reflect the nature of randomness itself, not a hidden system or trend that can be exploited.

The combinations section shows which pairs and triplets of main numbers have appeared together most frequently in past Mega Millions drawings. A pair is any two numbers drawn in the same drawing, while a triplet is any three. With five numbers drawn per game, each drawing produces 10 possible pairs and 10 possible triplets.

Even the "most common" pairs and triplets typically appear in a very small percentage of total drawings. These combinations are not predictive — they simply reflect which groupings have occurred by chance so far. Every possible combination of numbers has an equal probability of being drawn.
